Adele says her divorce was ‘overdue and exhausting’

Adele says her divorce from Simon Konecki was ‘overdue’.

The songstress, 33, initially filed for their marriage split in 2019, and it was finalised earlier this year.

The former couple, who share son Angelo together, were married for one year before they decided to part ways.

Her new music reflects how she felt during the difficult time of her life, with the singer channelling her feelings of “embarrassment” into album 30 – which is released on November 19.

Speaking to Heart Breakfast’s Jamie Theakston and Amanda Holden about her new single Easy On Me on Friday, he asked: “There will be a lot of people listening who have got things in their life that they’re not too happy about, you did something about it. You made some big, life-changing decisions, how important was that to you?”

Adele explained: “It was overdue. It was exhausting, it was really hard work but I was able to take the time that I needed, which isn’t a given for everyone, I’m very aware of that.”

She continued: “The more and more you put it off, the worse and worse it gets and I had been putting it off anyway for years before… now I am chilled as anything. So I’d say it’s worth it, you know treading through all of that poo is worth it.”

Jamie’s co-host Amanda chimed in: “You have to put on your waders don’t you?” as Adele replied: “One hundred percent. Or you’ve just got to jump in head first.”

The lyrics in her new song seem to ask for forgiveness from her ex-husband – and possibly from her eight-year-old son too.

She references the 2019 breakdown of their marriage and why the three could not live happily together.

She sings: “There ain’t no room for our things to change. When we are both so deeply stuck in our ways, you can’t deny how hard I’ve tried. I changed who I was to put you both first, but now I give up… Go easy on me, baby.”

Adele and Simon met and began dating in 2011 when she was just 23.

In a round of radio interviews, Adele said Easy On Me was the first song she wrote for 30, when the split was seemingly still raw.
